How to wire a fuel pump to a switch

The fuel pump switch in my AFM tests out fine, so I don't think that is the cause of my problem. I imagine this is sort of a safety feature, shuts off the fuel pump if the engine stops. With the jumper installed, the fuel pump runs whenever the ignition is on. When does the fuel pump run?

I keep a spare pump and a fuel filter in my truck at all times. The oil pressure sending switch supplies power to the pump (pre 99) through a relay so check them also.

Thats what im asking. Can the rest of the system handel more pressure then the stock pump/wiring can deliver. Alot of dsmers run 12-8 awg to thier pump, and use the stock wire to power a relay. Seems like it would be a decent upgrade if you could gain alittle bit more fuel into the engine with just the cost of a relay and wire.
